Throwback Thursday: Diamond Dancing
Picture the scene: we are in Zurich. It is the last week of August, and the sun has been beating down all day on the athletes' hotel. Within 48 hours, Weltklasse Zurich, the first IAAF Diamond League Final of 2017 will take place at the Letzigrund Stadion, just a few hundred metres away. For the athletes, the Diamond Trophy is within touching distance.
So how do you take your mind off the pressure? Well one way is to give Luis Castro a call and ask him if he has a spare moment. The Puerto Rican high jumper is not just known for his jumping, he's also known for his salsa skills.
So it was that Katerina Stefanidi, world champion and now double Diamond Trophy winner in the women's pole vault, made her first (seven) steps into a new world of dance, all under the watchful - and ever serious - eye of Gianmarco Tamberi...who was also there for some reason.
So, in the words of Señor Castro himself, we all know Stefanidi can jump. But could she dance?
